Although various forms of an extended cruise control (which enable the driver to temporarily disengage from controlling the vehicle), and some variation of limited autonomous self-driving vehicles within certain designated areas might be launched into production within less than a decade, the realization of actual widespread automotive production cycle of complete ‘EXACT Self-Driving’ vehicles (‘so-called ‘level four’ without any steering wheel, pedals or on-board control by its passengers) has many hurdles to clear with “Confusion over Automated Driving” and that will take decades until a full production line (and retrofit of existing vehicles & infrastructure) of fully autonomous cars can be assimilated into the culture. Some old adage comes to mind; ‘you’re only as strong as your weakest link‘ which sums up the opportunities for ‘EXACT Self-Driving’ control.

Some of these hurdles are as follows:

  • development
  • naming conventions
  • testing
  • update-roll-outs
  • security
  • recall-process
  • safety
  • regulation
  • government
  • social-acceptance
  • insurance
  • practicality
  • cost
  • legal liability

As anticipated from summer 2016 auto sales research, Ford has announced a decline in sales and a current constructors business model interest rotation from buyers towards SUV’s & trucks versus cars. Any sales decline from GM & Ford, (GM, Ford U.S. Sales in May More Than Analysts Estimated) which is important in gauging the momentum in current consumer spending, will also direct constructors towards a higher allocation of their resources into the new constructors model of alternative fuel & autonomous design. Apple has rebooted their projects focusing on autonomous navigation software, along with Tesla self-driving upgrade currently named ‘Autopilot’ while under NHTSA review.

Elon Musk thinks so | As anticipated from last months auto sales research, Ford has announced a decline in sales (BRIEF-Ford says May 2016 total U.S. vehicles sales 235,997 down 5.9 pct) and a current constructors business model interest rotation from buyers towards SUV’s & trucks versus cars. Any sales decline from GM & Ford, (GM, Ford U.S. Sales in May Fall More Than Analysts Estimated) which is important in gauging the momentum in current consumer spending, will also direct constructors towards a higher allocation of their resources into the new constructors model of alternative fuel & autonomous design.

(5/20/2016@09:10 Pacific Time Zone)With the current production model of gasoline powered (U.S. auto sales to fall 5.7% in May, LMC and Power say) vehicles forecast in decline, and somewhat of a pricing floor established for its principal raw energy source (oil Fossil Fuels energy ) it appears that the current constructors version of behind-the-wheel driving powered by internal combustion engines may have reached a plateau of vehicle sales, and provides the most opportune entry into seriously looking at the ramifications (manufacturing/insurance/safety/social acceptance) of the soon to be in production “Self-Driving Autonomous Cars” via electric car advancements | Michigan Bills Expand Use Of Driverless Cars Beyond Testing.
